The Do's and Don'ts of Engagement Session Outfits

The Do's and Don'ts of Engagement Session Outfits

We want to take a minute to answer the number one question we are most commonly asked by couples before their engagement session and that is “What should we wear to our engagement session?” This is a legitimate concern and we totally get it! It’s always a little intimidating to have your picture taken and picking the perfect outfit can really make a huge difference in the outcome of your portraits!

So here are our top five do's and don'ts to finding the perfect outfits that will be sure to compliment you both!

  1. Do coordinate > Don’t match!

There are a lot of reasons for this rule of thumb, but it basically all comes down to the fact that “matchy matchy” outfits can easily make an image appear a little boring because everything is the same and nothing pops! There’s no contrast and there is definitely nothing that stands out! Coordinating colors, however, are guaranteed to capture the eye in a way that is interesting, cohesive, and automatically creates a flattering image every time! Pick colors that compliment each other or if you both want to wear the same color, consider wearing different shades.

  1. Do dress your best > Don’t wear something that is uncomfortable!

We all want to feel and look our best in pictures and when we dress our finest this naturally ensures that we will feel good and that we are going to rock our session!

Most couples likely already have a thousand candid photos or selfies wearing their everyday clothes, so taking the opportunity to take full advantage of your engagement session and going all out will produce images you will definitely love! A lot of couples like to incorporate one casual outfit and one dressier outfit, and we LOVE that!

  1. Do add variety > Don’t bring more than two outfits!

Variety is the spice of life and adding patterns, different materials, and accessories really makes your outfits your own!

As photographers, we love when our couples bring two different outfits to their shoot because it gives their session totally different “looks”!

We recommend not bringing more than two changes of clothes to your shoot, however, because we, as natural light photographers, don’t want portrait time to be compromised by the amount of time it takes to change outfits.

We work by the golden light of the evening sun after all, and unfortunately, once it’s gone it's gone!

  1. Do make it personal >Don't be afraid to be creative!

What is more perfect than a photo that captures your passions and YOUR style! Don't be afraid to have one of your outfits represent who you are! Whether it is a favorite hobby, sport, career, or style! Embrace the season! Fall and Winter can mean fun accessories, hats, boots, and scarves! Spring and Summer bring sundresses, floppy hats, and fun colors!

      5. Do have fun > Don’t let the process stress you!

Last, but certainly not least, have fun with the process! Don’t be afraid to ask your photographer for their opinion! They are more than willing to help and can give you assurance or advice for any doubts or stress you may be feeling!
